In the fourth year of my Media Design studies, I was given the task of creating a series of eight posters for the North Sea Jazz Festival. This assignment was inspired by the competition held by the Willem de Kooning Academy.
The goal was to design four figurative posters and four abstract posters, avoiding the stereotypical jazz style. Instead, the focus was on developing a fresh and unique visual approach.
I started by creating the abstract posters, exploring forms and compositions that captured the essence of jazz in a non-traditional way. These abstract visuals then served as the foundation for the figurative posters, which incorporated the festival lineup and essential information.
My design was inspired by the way sunlight beams filter through water, creating a dynamic and vibrant play of light and motion. This visual metaphor not only reflects the immersive experience of music but also symbolizes dance and movement, key elements of jazz performances.
The result is a striking series of posters that capture the energy, rhythm, and fluidity of jazz in a modern and unexpected way.
