Caged Light is an interactive light installation that translates the raw energy of industrial techno and hardstyle into a physical experience. The project combines industrial aesthetics with sound-reactive technology, featuring a bright red fluorescent tube enclosed within a welded cage made from reclaimed steel grating. By reusing affordable materials, the installation embraces a sustainable approach while remaining accessible for smaller clubs and independent event organisers.
Designed to become part of the performance rather than simple decoration, the light reacts directly to the music. A custom-built Arduino and Teensy system analyses the audio in real time, filtering out all frequencies except the kick drum, allowing the lamp to pulse precisely with the rhythm. This creates a powerful visual connection between sound and light, transforming the installation into an active element of the club experience.
The project was inspired by the increasing financial pressure on the underground nightlife scene. As rising costs make large-scale lighting productions less accessible, Caged Light explores how a high-impact visual experience can be achieved through simple engineering, recycled materials, and thoughtful design. The installation demonstrates that meaningful experiences do not require expensive technology, but can instead be created through strong concepts and carefully crafted interaction. Throughout the development process, I designed the visual identity, programmed the sound-reactive system, and fabricated the complete steel structure by hand. By combining physical making, electronics, and interaction design, Caged Light demonstrates my interest in creating immersive installations that connect technology with culture and experience.
